Ministry of Tourism Successfully Launches First 14 Weeks Ecotourism Pledge and Ecotourism Framework in Collaboration with Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy

The Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives, in collaboration with USAID and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, proudly announced the launch of the Ecotourism Framework and Roadmap. This initiative aimed to promote environmentally friendly tourism by identifying unique sites, establishing eco-standards, and introducing diverse tourism options.

As part of the First 14 Weeks Roadmap on Ecotourism pledge, the Ministry of Tourism unveiled the Ecotourism Framework and Roadmap on February 19, 2024, in partnership with the Climate Adaptation Project under the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.

With global awareness increasing about the environmental impacts of development and rising tourism numbers, there was a growing imperative to shift towards more responsible forms of tourism in the Maldives. Ministry of Tourism was dedicated to ensuring the long-term conservation and sustainability of the environment, mitigating negative impacts of tourism, identifying sustainable best practices, and ensuring tourist facilities operated under secure management plans.

Ecotourism entailed responsible nature-based travel aimed at minimizing negative impacts on the natural and socio-cultural environment while increasing awareness of sustainability and conservation.

The project involved identifying and mapping new Eco sites, establishing guidelines, regulations, and standards, implementing eco-friendly practices in tourism services, introducing ecotourism certification, conducting education and awareness programs, and developing marketing material showcasing the destination's eco-friendly initiatives.

The Ministry of Tourism thanked stakeholders, partners, and the public for their support in making the Maldives a beacon of sustainable tourism in the global landscape.
