UNWTO

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development, environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. Additionally, UNWTO generates market knowledge, promotes competitive and sustainable tourism policies and instruments, fosters tourism education and training, and works to make tourism an effective tool for development through technical assistance projects around the world. UNWTO’s membership includes 159 countries, 6 Associate Members and over 500 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities.

Maldives joined UNWTO in 1981 and has had a strong relationship with the organization over the years. The ministry works closely with UNWTO and has previously requested technical assistance in formulation of master plans, policies and accepted invitations from UNWTO to participate in conferences, seminars and workshops annually. Maldives has served as the Chair for UNWTO Commission for South Asia, from 1983 to 1987, 1995 to 1997 and currently, 2020 to 2022. In Addition, Maldives also serves as the Chair for the South Asia in the UNWTO Global Tourism Crisis Committee, formed as a global guide to address, recover and provide technical assistance to heal from the global pandemic, Covid-19. Under many projects and assistances introduced in the global crisis committee, UNWTO has provided their technical assistance under the “Technical Assistance Recovery Package” to formulate and review the “Guideline for Restarting Tourism in Maldives”, the very first step in opening our borders and welcoming tourism back.

PATA

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is a membership association acting as a facilitator for the responsible development of Asia Pacific travel and tourism industry. This Association provides aligned advocacy, insightful research and innovative events to its member organizations, comprising 95 governments, state and city tourism bodies, 25 International Airlines and Airports, 108 hospitality organizations, 72 Educational Institutions and Hundreds of travel industry companies in Asia Pacific and beyond.

Maldives joined PATA chapter on 07th June 2000. During this past 20 years, Maldives has had a strong relationship with PATA and participated in various events organized by the Associated annually. Currently, Maldives is a member of PATA Board, Government and Destination Committee and in the Sustainability and Social Responsibility (SSR) Committee.
