The Maldives has solidified its status as a global tourism icon, being named the World’s Leading Destination for the fifth consecutive year and earning the title of World’s Leading Green Destination at the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2024, held on 24 November in Madeira, Portugal.
These global accolades follow a strong performance earlier this year at the World Travel Awards (Indian Ocean Category), hosted during the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024 in Dubai. Winning the title of World’s Leading Green Destination marks a historic milestone for the nation, showcasing its dedication to preserving its natural environment and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
Accepting the awards on behalf of the industry, Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal emphasized that these achievements are the result of the collective efforts of every stakeholder in the tourism sector – from hoteliers and dive operators to airlines, travel agencies, hospitality staff, tour guides, and local communities. These accolades reflect the shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and environmental stewardship that drives the Maldives’ global success.
It also reaffirms the Maldives’ standing as a global leader in tourism, celebrating the nation’s continued achievements and aspirations for the future. They also reflect the vision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, whose unwavering commitment ensures the Maldives’ tourism sector continues to thrive while embracing sustainability and resilience.
The Ministry of Tourism remains focused on driving growth, strengthening the country’s reputation as a premier destination, and safeguarding its natural and cultural treasures for generations to come.
